I Need to Create Social Media Content for My Business. Where Do I Start?
You know you need to post on social media. You’ve got a business to promote, plenty to offer and customers you’d love to reach. But when you finally sit down to create something, your mind goes blank. What should I post? What should it look like? How does everyone else make it look so easy?
Before you know it, you’ve spent an hour scrolling for inspiration and haven’t created a thing. Meanwhile, the rest of your to-do list is still waiting. Sound familiar?
Creating content can feel like an overwhelming mountain to climb, especially when you’re already busy running a business. You’re expected to come up with the ideas, write the words, choose the pictures and somehow make everything look professional. It’s a lot to get your head around.
Then there’s the minefield of options. Different platforms, design tools, templates, videos, carousels… even choosing where to start can leave you feeling exhausted. My advice? Start small. Choose one thing you want your audience to know about your business, and create a post around that.
Perhaps it’s a service people don’t realise you offer. An answer to a question you’re regularly asked. Or a lovely piece of feedback from a happy customer. You probably have more to share than you think. The next step is finding a comfortable way to turn those ideas into content.
That’s where Canva can help. Canva gives you a starting point for creating graphics for your business, even if design isn’t something you’ve done before. You can begin with a template, add your own words and photographs, and use colours and fonts that feel right for your brand. Having something to work from can make that blank page feel a little less daunting.
If you’re new to Canva, my free guide is a good place to begin. It’s an introduction to help you take those first steps without feeling you need to learn everything at once.

It also gives you a way to present what you do clearly. You can turn a useful tip into an easy-to-read graphic, give a customer testimonial the attention it deserves, or create a post explaining how people can work with you.
And once you’ve created a design you’re happy with, you can reuse it. Change the photograph, update the wording and you’ve got a starting point for your next post. That means less time wondering where to begin.
Of course, the design is only part of it. Think about the person reading your post. What would they find useful? What question could you answer? What would help them understand the value of what you offer? Combine that with a clear, recognisable design and you’re giving people more opportunities to get to know your business.
